Admission/selection criteria and evaluation of applicant's academic and other merits

|
Given the cross-disciplinary nature of this Masters, no specific training in any one discipline is required. Candidates will therefore be selected on the basis of the following criteria and merits:
- Good academic background in geography, area studies, social sciences or related fields.
- Good professional experience acquired in regional planning, urban planning or environmental management.
- Academic record (average mark).
- Computer skills, experience using GIS, and proficiency in languages.
- Any other criteria recognized by the committee.

Specific admission requirements

|
- Given the cross-disciplinary nature of the Masters, no specific knowledge is required on admission.
- However, it is envisaged that candidates will have had some training in geography, area studies or the social sciences to guarantee success in the Masters.

Skills profile
|
|
|
|
The Masters seeks to provide training in four skills: the acquisition of knowledge, an understanding of procedures (know how), the ability to apply this knowledge and these procedures (skills), and behavioural skills.
Some of these skills are generic or cross-disciplinary; moreover, they build on the skills, abilities and attitudes developed during earlier studies (undergraduate degree course). They include:
- An ability to analyse and synthesize information
- An ability to manage information
- Good oral and written communication skills
- An ability to think originally
- An ability to put knowledge into practice
- Basic computer skills
- An ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
- Critical and self-critical skills
- Decision-taking skills
- Being motivated by quality
The specific aims of the Masters are to develop and enhance a series of skills concerned with theoretical and applied training that should enable students to work professionally and to conduct research in the field of territorial planning and environmental management:
- The ability to analyse and interpret territorial and social structures and processes.
- An understanding of the foundations of regional planning and territorial management.
- An ability to interpret the legal and institutional framework of regional planning and territorial management.
- The ability to handle spatial data sources.
- Theoretical and practical understanding of the instruments used in environmental management, territorial planning and urban planning.
- Ability to integrate the elements involved in territorial planning and environmental management both theoretically and practically.
- The ability to write regional reports: territorial plans, strategic sector plans, urban plans and plans for the management of natural spaces.
- The ability to apply different planning and management instruments.
- The ability to promote local and regional development.
- The ability to undertake basic research examining the situation of a given territory.
- An awareness of the need for sustainable territorial management.
